Empower, Run Your World

Run Your World: Dujon Smith

In February 2018, I self-published my first book, Run My World: How I Empowered Myself Through Fitness. It would not have been possible without the support of incredible friends, mentors, and role models, and now I’m highlighting some of the amazing people in my life that run their worlds.

Empowered (wo)men empower (wo)men, so now I’m raising a glass to some of the best people I know. I’m so grateful to share their stories — I promise you’ll be even more inspired to run your world!

Mary’s note: Dujon is my best work friend, and he is one the smartest and hardest working people I have ever met. Everyone always wants him in the room because of his humor, charm, and thoughtful insights. I’m so grateful for our friendship in addition to the way he advocates for me at work. Everyone needs a cheerleader, and I’m always happy to return the favor for this incredible guy!

In one sentence, what does it mean for you to run your world?

To live life on your own terms.

Acknowledge Your Past: What’s one lesson from your past that has really influenced your life?

As Arnold Schwarzenegger eloquently stated, “Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”

Find Your Fit: What are your favorite ways to move and exercise? How did you find your fit?

Running has become my favorite way to move and exercise.  Over the past couple of years I have come to realize that running enables your mind to throw out all the junk that it has been holding. It can lower your stress levels and can make you think more clearly. The negative thoughts that have been hovering around in your mind can vanish as you begin to run.

Fuel Your Body: What is your favorite meal to fuel your body? What is your favorite meal to fuel your soul? How do you try to fight/challenge the cultural standards around dieting and disordered eating?

My favorite meal to fuel my body is a protein-packed acai bowls! My favorite meal to fuel my soul is Jerk Chicken & Oxtails. I grew up with this great Jamaican cuisine — one bite can always brighten my mood. I LOVE to eat and try new things. I have tried veganism and vegetarianism, and it’s been interesting to see the way cultural standards are questioned by others around me.

Practice Mindfulness: Do you meditate? If so, how? How do you try to be mindful on a daily/weekly/monthly basis?

I use the Headspace app and weekly routines that combine yoga and meditation. I usually try these activities before bed, when waking up, or on my commutes to/from work.

HIIT vs. LISS: Tell us about your work-life “balance.” How do you manage planning/productivity while being a straight up hustler?

I remember that there are 168 hours in a week and that I need to prioritize time for work, my health, my hustle, and my framily (friends and family). So usually on Sunday, I take a look at the week and assess how best to allocate my time to achieve the goals that I have set for myself for that quarter.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone: What have you done in 2018 that is most out of your comfort zone?

Running a half marathon back in May was definitely out of my comfort zone but I’m so glad I did it! It truly pushed me mentally, physically and emotionally.

Shine Like a Bad Bitch: What accomplishment makes you most proud? What’s a big, hairy audacious goal (BHAG) that you’ve been contemplating and want to speak into existence?

The accomplishment that I am most proud of is stretching a penny into a dollar and finding the funds and resources that have allowed me to travel to 49 countries in the last nine years. I’m hoping my homeland of Jamaica will be my 50th! My BHAG for the next several months that I want to speak into existence is a debt-free life. No more student loans or carried credit debt. I believe my education was a worthwhile investment but I also think that once I have gotten rid of the burdens of student loan debt that I will have the freedom to do even more things that I love and enjoy.
