Empower, Run Your World

Run Your World: Kimmy Sou

In February 2018, I self-published my first book, Run My World: How I Empowered Myself Through Fitness. It would not have been possible without the support of incredible friends, mentors, and role models, and now I’m highlighting some of the amazing people in my life that run their worlds.

Empowered (wo)men empower (wo)men, so now I’m raising a glass to some of the best people I know. I’m so grateful to share their stories — I promise you’ll be even more inspired to run your world!

Mary’s note: I met Kimmy at a Nike Air Society event last year, and her personality is magnetic. From being the ultimate festival queen to a lifestyle blogger, I love that she is candid about the #sponsored industry since she works on both sides. She’s hilarious, sweet, and incredibly humble. She is such a boss!

In one sentence, what does it mean for you to run your world?

You hold the power to control your life.

Acknowledge Your Past: What’s one lesson from your past that has really influenced your life?

I cared a lot about pleasing other people and living up to a certain lifestyle which led me to hold back on being my true self. I am the total opposite now. I have no filter.

Find Your Fit: What are your favorite ways to move and exercise? How did you find your fit?

I love doing yoga because it causes me to slow down and calm my mind (which is a challenge). I also like to mix in barre, Pilates, and strength conditioning.

Fuel Your Body: What is your favorite meal to fuel your body? What is your favorite meal to fuel your soul? Have you had any struggles with your relationship with food? How do you try to fight/challenge the cultural standards around dieting and disordered eating?

I love veggies, so sauteed kale, mushrooms, cauliflower, are my go to foods. I absolutely love fried foods and can never turn down fried chicken. I like to balance from healthy to not so healthy. I don’t like restrictions, and I work out to maintain my weight. Life is too short!

I don’t compare my body to others. We should all understand that you are your own kind of beautiful. There were times I tried my hardest to get 6-pack abs, but I realized that I would have to restrict myself to a diet, and I wasn’t willing to do that. I’d rather eat what I want and be happy with my stomach versus being hangry with a 6-pack that I would only show a couple of times in the summer.

Practice Mindfulness: Do you meditate? If so, how? How do you try to be mindful on a daily/weekly/monthly basis?

No, I wish I could meditate on demand. It’s hard for me to get out of my head. Doing yoga helps me stay mindful. Also, I like to listen to music and zone out.

HIIT vs. LISS: Tell us about your work-life “balance.” How do you manage planning/productivity while being a straight up hustler?

I’m usually 0 to 100 real quick.  Most days, I work my 9-5, then go straight to an event or fitness class. I try to have a day every once in a while that I press the reset button.  One weekend you will find me at a 3-day music festival, the next I will be doing absolutely nothing but Netflixing. That’s my balance.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone: What have you done that is most out of your comfort zone? Tell us a travel experience that pushed you out of your comfort zone.

I would say starting my blog was scary. I knew that people would judge me and talk, but I let all fears go to share my story. It ended being the best thing to happen to me.

Regarding a travel experience… I flew to Paris on my own to meet friends, and even though it was a direct flight, the airline lost my luggage. I was totally out of my comfort zone and got lost in the streets trying to find my hotel without any cell service. Still, I was able to navigate and just rolled with the punches. Carpe Diem.

Shine On: What accomplishment makes you most proud? What’s a big, hairy audacious goal (BHAG) that you’ve been contemplating and want to speak into existence?

A few years ago, I left the corporate world to work in Sponsorship Sales (a field completely new to me).  I took a HUGE pay cut and had to rely on commissions. It was terrifying but I ended up excelling at it.  It also opened up doors to work with some amazing clients including music festivals.  If you know me at all, I love music festivals!  Somehow, I was able to turn my passion into a career! My BHAG would be to speak on a panel one day (even though I’m a little scared to do public speaking).
